OCHO Presents: Dia De Los Muertos

Día de los Muertos is a vibrant Mexican cultural tradition of celebrating deceased loved ones during the Catholic holidays of All Saints’ Day (November 1) and All Souls’ Day (November 2) and coinciding with Halloween. The beautiful and soulful holiday is widely celebrated throughout San Antonio. Age-old customs are evident in colorful displays and altares (altars) set up throughout the city. Family and friends of the deceased create these altares, dedicating them to the spirits of their loved ones. Candles, brilliant flowers and photos of loved ones are arranged among incense and ofrendas (offerings) like toys, drinks and favorite foods. Special delicacies such as traditional Mexican mole sauce, tamales, the ritual pan de muerto (bread of the dead) and lustrous sugar skulls are prepared for the offering. Processions to cemeteries are organized, all-night vigils are held and satirical poems, called calaveras (skulls), are read.

We invite our neighbors, relatives, and friends to enjoy a special holiday food and drink menu prepared by Chef Edward Villarreal to celebrate those who have come before us. The menu includes:

APPETIZER

Bacon Wrapped Shrimp Skewers

with Avocado Crema, Fried Poblano Rajas,

Arugula Red Onion Salad & Cilantro Jalepeño Ranch

ENTRÉE

Roasted Half Chicken Adobado

with Arroz Amarillo & Charred Corn Relish

DESSERT

Crispy Buñuelos

with Coconut Ice Cream, Cajeta & Berries

With a selection of music to help us celebrate the time-honored tradition. Join us for the following events:

Thursday, November 1 from 8-11 PM

Havana HiFi with DJ Steven Lee Moya

Friday, November 2 from 8-11 PM

Live music by Los Callejeros De San Anto

There is no cover charge to attend any of these events.

For more information or to reserve a room during Día de Los Muertos, please call the front desk at (210) 222-2008.

Restored By Light: Reinspired

Don't miss the live art, music, and fun at Restored By Light: Reinspired!

As part of San Antonio's Tricentennial celebrations, we are pleased to expand the popular Restored By Light event to Mission San Juan (with a twist!) Our other events such as Restored By Light 2018 allow spectators to glimpse the historic appearance of the once-brightly painted missions.

This event will be held at Mission San Juan where there is no evidence of historic frescoes. However, we are inspired by our rich history and culture and will project a once-in-a-lifetime artistic interpretation onto the facade of the mission.

This event is presented by City of San Antonio Office of Historic PreservationBrooksSan Antonio Missions National Historical ParkSan Antonio 300, and Freeman. Free and open to the public!
